Have you ever opened ChatGPT and thought, “So many buttons… what do they all do?” You’re not alone!

Once you understand the layout and features of ChatGPT, it stops being just a chatbot and becomes your personal writing assistant, data analyst, brainstorming buddy, and more.

Let’s break it all down—step by step—with simple language and real examples.

🌐 First Things First: This is Just the Website Version

There are mobile apps, desktop versions, and even custom GPTs. But in this guide, we’re focusing only on the ChatGPT website—the one you access on your browser.

🖥️ The Layout: 3 Key Parts

When you open ChatGPT, you’ll notice three main sections:

Sidebar menu with options like New chat, Search chats, and Library on a black background. Icons include Sora, GPTs, Adobe Express.

1. Left Sidebar—Your Chat Manager

This is where all your past conversations live.

  • Click a chat to reopen it

  • Rename a chat by clicking the three dots

  • Use emojis to make them easy to find! (🧠💼🎯)

🔍 Quick Tip: Use the search bar (or Ctrl + K / Cmd + K) to find an old chat, like when you brainstormed “taglines” last week.

2. Centre Panel—The Conversation Space

This is the main area where you type and read responses.

  • Type your question at the bottom

  • Click the + icon to upload files (PDFs, images, spreadsheets)

  • Press Enter to send or Shift + Enter for a new line

📂 Want to upload a document for feedback? Just drag and drop!

  • GPT-4: More powerful, understands images & files

  • GPT-4o: Even faster and better at multitasking

  • GPT-4-turbo (Mini): Lighter versionYou can switch between them anytime.

📁 Projects Tab – Like Folders for Work

Need to organize chats and files around one topic (like “New Product Launch”)? Use Projects in the sidebar.

It keeps:

  • Chats

  • Uploaded files

  • NotesAll in one place — like a little workspace!

⚙️ Useful Buttons You’ll See in Every Chat

Each ChatGPT response has helpful options:

  • Copy—Instantly copy the full reply

  • 🔁 Regenerate—Get a different version of the answer

  • ✏️ Edit Prompt – Fix your original question without restarting

  • ↔️ Toggle Versions—Compare old and new replies

🔐 Temporary Chat Mode = No Saving

Want to chat privately without saving your data? Use Temporary Chat Mode.

  • Great for one-time questions or private info

🧠 Customize ChatGPT Just for You

Click your profile icon (top right) and go to “Customize ChatGPT”.

Example:“I’m a marketing manager. Keep answers short, clear, and creative.”

ChatGPT will now shape its replies to fit your style.

Enable Memory too—ChatGPT can remember things like

  • Your role (e.g., teacher, developer)

  • Preferred tone or writing style

  • Specific facts about your business or goals

You can reset or review memory anytime.

🔍 Explore GPTs—Pre-Built AI Assistants

Examples:

  • 🧙 AD Copy Wizard – writes ads

  • 📊 Data Visualizer – turns your numbers into charts

  • ✍️ Essay Helper – improves writing

If you're a Plus or Pro user, you get extra features:

  • File Analysis—Upload spreadsheets or images

  • Code Interpreter—Do calculations and generate charts

  • Web Search—Get up-to-date info from the internet

  • Canvas—Visually organise and plan your ideas

These are especially helpful for research, business planning, and data work.

  1. Start a new chat

  2. Upload a PDF with competitor research

  3. Ask: “Summarize key strengths and weaknesses of each competitor.”

  4. Want a better layout? Edit the prompt: “Put this in a comparison table.”

  5. Save the chat under Projects → New Product Launch

  6. Rename it to “🧘 Morning Bliss Strategy.”

  7. Add custom instructions like “You are a brand strategist.”

  8. Use search (Ctrl + K) to find your earlier chat about “taglines.”

Easy, right?

💡 Final Tips

  • Use emojis to quickly spot chats

  • Edit prompts instead of restarting chats

  • Toggle responses to compare improvements

  • Explore and save GPTs to speed up tasks

  • Customize your experience to match your role
